Rock music through obituaries -Cohort 2022 pt 2 too young to die

Rock and Rollers over 20 but not yet 40, should not have died in 2022. Those born 1984-1993 came of age in the era of the iPhone, which debuted in 2007. They have distaste for mainstream rock which dominated all forms of media in their youth. This lead to rediscovering raw 70’s rock, but also a big market for new unpolished Indie rock- music that harkens back to the Boomer’s 60’s folk rock. Those born later 1994-2002 have no concept of life without internet; Don’t understand why people still want to use devices that are not portable or need to be plugged in while being used; Can’t be bothered to make music playlists and are happy with whatever Spotify or TicTok dishes out based on their likes. Older millennials collect toys fanatically, but not for their children- Action figures, Hello Kitty, Gaming cards and so on, but most significantly, concurrently with retiring Boomers, they started a vinyl record resurgence that peaked in 2022.

It is a tragedy for anyone under40 to die, so I included the cause of death if it was reported. Of the 21 music careers cut short in 2022, 11 of them were rap music artists who died violently. This list reflects American violence in general which predominantly involves young people. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the total number of gun violence deaths from all causes in 2022 was almost 43,000 by December 2022. There were 636 mass shootings and 36 mass murders in 2022. Rap music is out on the fringes of the Rock and Roll category, which this list represents, but they often digitally sample rock music in their songs. From the start Rock was about rebelliousness like todays Rap music, and pushing the edge of respectability is a keystone of legendary rock artists.
